The Magic of Yellowstone
That's right - they are all here in Yellowstone, and thousands. Ten thousand wonders of geo-thermal - half everything that exists in the world. Two thousand buffalo. Twenty thousand elk. Over a waterfall twice as high as Niagara Falls, a park that is larger than two Entire states, more than a thousand miles of trails, and historic hotels built for the rich, a century ago - including the largest structure roundwood in the world, the enormous Old Faithful Inn.
But that's not all: You can fish or boat on the largest mountain lake - Lake Yellowstone - throughout North America (20 miles wide by 14 miles long - a coastline of 110 miles!). And if the economy has you bummed having to put that Safari Africa for a year or two, think instead of visiting "The biggest mammal sanctuary of the West in large forty-eight lower states. "Certainly, you will not come face to face with a rhinoceros. But one tonne of bison can be equally intimidating. And in addition to elk and moose and Griz Buffalo and there are wolves, black bears, mountain sheep, antelope, cougar, coyote, mule deer ... and those not are the largest creatures.
Feathers are your preference? Yellowstone is known to 46 million birders in America for his trumpet swans, osprey, bald eagles, golden eagles, white pelicans, sandhill cranes, great blue heron, Canada geese, ravens, magpies, Killdeer, the yellow-headed blackbirds, divers, and more. Even if you can not tell a bird from a blue duck you'll get a kick out of range.
But enough of lists ... you get the idea. There are so many things to see and it is easy to reach here.
There are airports nearby (West Yellowstone, Bozeman, Jackson ...), if you decide to fly. But if the decline in gasoline prices, you have thought of a road trip for the family to see the USA in your Chevrolet (other brands are allowed), know that driving can be just a marvel. ( "Wonderland", incidentally, was a common name of the 19th century, this place, before he became the first road to national park profit 1872 and was then officially monickered Yellowstone).
Five paved road entrances invite you to the heart of the park, a trail network in eight road designed to take visitors to and through a land unforgettable. But even before you reach the quarter million acres enormous sanctuary spa and animal, Rocky Mountain Wilderness, you have crossed the "Great Yellowstone Ecosystem. "Like a jewel in its box, the park is almost surrounded by the Gallatin, Madison, Absaroka, Gros Ventre, Wind River and Mountains Teton, in five national forests. As the old saying goes, getting there is half the fun.
As director of a company Active Travel visit, I am often asked "What's your favorite trip?" If I have just returned from somewhere, I'm almost always the answer is I come from, because I think the people - guests and guides - I have enjoyed for an entire week.
But my favorite place Favorite? You guessed it - Yellowstone. Much of the reason is that I have already mentioned, the wonderful sights and even sounds of the place - the whoosh and gurgle of exploding geysers, bubbling, plopping his pots of mud, the laughter of children seeing these things for first time (my guides are unanimous in their preference for family trips, for precisely this reason). Clark's Nutcrackers and huge black crows fly, making their distinctive sounds, while grunting buffalo near their displeasure at having to move to stay in the shade. There is always something happening in the park.
And then there are the stories. Dinnertime for group travel is when you hear what everybody has seen and lived day in Yellowstone and that means a lot. This would be true even if you through the park and took walks walk around pools, hissing and geysers. But the road network covers only two percent of what there is to see. Our tours take people off the roads and backcountry biking and mountain trails on foot, and just north of the park boundary (always in the Yellowstone Ecosystem) horse in the high country guided by real cowboys. You can imagine the stories that spread to dinner after these activities.
For the natural history of the range of animals and geological wonders of Yellowstone, the park's human history is equally fascinating. We must imagine the reactions of the Crow and Blackfoot and Shoshone Indians as they traveled through the land of the park today, and John Colter (a former member of the Lewis and Clark expedition), which was perhaps the first white man to see this region - and one winter boot! Fortunately, there are better records of the mountain man Jim Bridger amazed curiosities two decades later, in 1825 ..
As Colter, when he tried to tell the truth of what he had seen, Bridger faces with smiles and shaking his head when he reported boiling springs and petrified trees. Then, in perfect fur trapper He bent a little. He said with a straight face, catching trout in deep water cooler these sources and pulling the fish up slowly, cook his meals out. Three some scientific expeditions (1869 - 1871) were required to take the Americans believe that what had previously been the rumor, and all are interesting to read. But the most fascinating for its human dimension, is Truman Everts long article Scribner's Monthly Magazine "Thirty-seven days of Peril" (now available in book form titled "Lost in Yellowstone), Langford-in which he described in separate 1870 Washburn-Doane expedition and having to live in the desert before being rescued.
Despite it took care of hundreds of wounded soldiers of civil war on the bloody field at Fredericksburg, he had trouble taking care of him when his horse bolted on the second day of his separation from the group. "My blankets, firearms, guns, fishing matches - everything except the clothes on my person, a couple of knives and a small opera glass were attached to the saddle. "Our guides remind customers of the factory which has supported, now called the "Everts Thistle. "The poor man had lost four days without food, when he fell on one and, finding" a little like a radish, ate several years. (He cooked in a "small, round, boiling spring, which I called my dinner pot ....")
Everts was "delighted by this discovery and, with the" hunger appeased, went to sleep under a tree - for be awakened at night by the screeching of a mountain lion. He hastily climbed the tree and kept the cat at bay by throwing branches and yells back. Hundreds of thistles, two small fish, a few crickets, a small bird and a month later, the man who found him said laconically: "He is alive and safe, but very weak in the flesh." He was not joking, for the weight of Everts, has only been guessed at fifty pounds. Another writer who interviewed her savior, described his condition in more detail:
... he never saw so sad Looking In humans, as has been Evarts [sic] when found. a few tattered rags on a gaunt skeleton, frozen, scalded, scorched and languishing in a semblance of two-legged animals, hideous beyond description ....
Truman Everts was consumed, but no one has ever been lost for so long Yellowstone and survived. The man was gravel. In another demonstration of his endurance he married a second time at sixty-five, father of a child at sixty-five, and died ten years later. (I include her story, not only because it is fascinating, but because the publication of its report in 1871 riveted the nation and has contributed to the effort to save this huge chunk of desert as a national park.)
Do not think that history human becomes dull, once became one of Yellowstone Park in 1872. Five years later, when gold was discovered on Indian land and the Nez Perce tribe is sentenced to a reservation, they have chosen a pension in Canada, instead of fighting and routed themselves through Yellowstone. While in the park they have encountered a number groups of tourists, including that of Mrs. George Cowan, who later wrote a lengthy description of their capture. Her husband, a veteran of the civil war was first shot through the thigh and just a few minutes later, in the head by an Indian holding a pistol at close range. left to death by the Nez Perce, he woke up after a few hours (the pistol bullet was flattened soft against the skull and do not penetrate), but when he got up, He was seen by another Indian, and shot - this time by the hip.
More hours passed as he faded in and out of consciousness. Then he came and, hearing the silence, began to crawl towards the water (he could not walk). Five days later he had covered ten miles to a former Camp Lower Geyser Basin and was found by two scouts of the army. They fed him, wrapped him in blankets against the cold night (almost all of Yellowstone is more than 7000 "), has built a good fire, and explaining that they had to continue scouting and send a patrol the army to his relief, departed.
Later that night a great wind blew the flames in the trees nearby, creating a wildfire, George Cowan barely managed to crawl to safety, burning hands and knees. But he was later taken over by a patrol Army and full out of the park, then transferred to a car that flipped into a ravine when the horses bolted. Fortunately, the occupants were discarded before the descent. The triple-up, burned, and severely bruised Cowan today demanded that all fall and winter to recover his visit to Yellowstone.
But do not take the wrong idea. For every old story of someone lost time, shot, or eaten by a bear (necessarily an Oriental who tried to pet the Griz Nice or feeding black bears in hand), there are countless magazine articles written by visitors praising the peaceful beauty of "Wonderland" (that name has died a slow death). In fact, by 1883, a group of enthusiasts bicycle pedaled the dirt on the wheels upscale. John Muir, most often associated with Yosemite, visited two years later, and suffered nothing worse than the equivalent of a clash today - he was thrown from his horse.
In 1887, Owen Wister, author of many western countries novels (including The Virginian) and a friend of Theodore Roosevelt, wrote that the lower falls of the Yellowstone River (which is twice the height of Niagara Falls) is "the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. "Then he and his buddies hell shocked awareness of tourists by washing their clothes in a geyser, and Blackberry brandy bought from a hotel committed to "... see how funny disruption of drinking water from streams very chemicals often raised in the inner man. "You will find purified water now.
If Rudyard Kipling had Horse mounted around the park with a Wister band of cut-up he had himself enjoyed. Instead, the thought of seeing the wonders on his long journey to London from India, he managed to get stuck in a car with two "seniors from Chicago," the Mistress "chewed gum and talked about his symptoms, while the husband each geyser complained of dreffel [terrible] waste of steam. " Whatever the cause, the author of The Jungle Book was not a happy man. He begins his article "Today I am in the park Yellowstone, and I would be dead. "Things did not improve much from there:
"The park is just a desert three thousand miles square, filled with every imaginable fans a fiery nature.
"The ground sounds hollow as kerosene-tin, and one day, the Hotel Mammoth, guests and all will descend into the caves below and be transformed into a stalactite. "[It has not happened yet.]
"... We market chatter for the uplands of Hell. They call it the Norris Geyser Basin on earth ... There was no land here, but all the other horrors. "
Needless to say, Kipling would not have done as a park warden. Or as an Austin-Lehman Adventures guide!
I wrote too much of this one-of-a-kind place where on earth, and there is more than a century of stories to tell ... as the contingent of "Buffalo Soldiers" in 1896 pedaling at Mammoth Hot Springs from Fort Missoula and back (you will see pictures of these bikers Stalwart when you visit the Old Faithful Inn) - a distance 790 miles with full field kit, the following year, they rode their bikes with heavy machinery on the ground between Montana and Missouri! And then there's the visit Teddy Roosevelt in 1903 ....
