Tips Oil Painting - All About Oil Painting Brushes
Brushes Oil Painting is available in a wide variety of sizes and shapes and can sometimes overwhelm a beginner. This article will give an overview of various oil painting brushes available and help you decide what type of brushes you should invest in.
BRUSH TEXTURES
Oil painting brushes come in two different textures responsible, and they are regarded as hard and soft. Hard brushes are generally referred to as "hair brushes" and they are quite resilient. Hard brushes are made of pig hair and they are strong and rigid. They hold a good amount of paint and can handle the oil painting very well. Personally, I prefer working with bristle brushes exclusively as I tend to paint rather rough and direct.
Oil paint brushes flexible are made from soft bristle from animals such as sand, squirrel, or mongoose. Softer brushes will generally give your painting look smoother and softer are most often used for finishing work or retail. Sable brushes are more expensive in general but there are synthetic nylon brushes are very good substitutes for the Sable. They are more flexible and less expensive than sand.
BRUSH SHAPES
It are five shapes to brushes that are commonly used and each is supposed to have its own function. I prefer to paint with flats, brights and of fliberts various sizes, and only occasionally use other forms. This is my preference and you will certainly develop your own as long as you paint Oil.
Apartments
Flat paint brushes oil have a wide square end with medium and long hairs. Flat brushes generally have much spring in them and can contain a lot of paint. You can use these brushes for broad sweeping or you can turn the brush on the edge to create fine lines. Brushes dishes are perfect for the early stages of a painting when you are blocking in large surfaces.
Brights
Bright paint brushes oil are similar in shape to flat brushes but the hairs are shorter. They are better used for shorter races controlled. They do not paint as well as a flat brush.
Filberts
The hazel is also like the flat brush only the edge of the brush has a rounded shape. The hairs of the filbert are medium to long length. The rounded shape give you more control then a bright. The filbert is great for blending and figurative work.
Rounds
A round oil painting brush has a round or pointed tip. They hold a good quantity of paint and are ideal for thin or thick lines. Use this brush for dabbing on dots or blotches of color. Round brushes are also good for washes, fills and detailed work. They are not suited for creating hard straight edges.
Fans
The fan brush oil painting is a flat fan shaped brush. The fan brush is a specialized brush. It is being used very often by the artist or not at all. It really depends on your style of painting. This brush is not suitable for holding paint. It is most often used for color matching and you should keep this brush clean and dry, if you intend to do much during a mixing session. The brush will begin to lose its effectiveness when filled with paint. You may want to keep some extras on hand.
BRUSH SIZE
Brushes Oil Painting is available in a variety of sizes indicated by numbers as in 1,2,4,6,8,10; size 1 being the lowest and 10 the most important in this example.
BRUSH MANUFACTURERS
Brushes for oil painting are made by a number of different manufacturers. Some of the most popular brands are Winsor & Newton Silver Brush and Robert Simmons. Some artists prefer one brand to another. Other artists, like having an assortment of different brands available. The only way you'll know what you like best is to work with brushes yourself.
CARING FOR YOUR BRUSH
Whatever the brush you buy, if they are at the top of the line expensive brushes, or cheaper, you will probably get more life out of them if you care for them properly. It seems to be a difference of opinion when it comes to brush care, especially when it comes to drying your brushes. I personally two products on hand for cleaning and conditioning my brushes: Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver and Mona Lisa Pink Brush Soap. I found the Masters Brush Cleaner works great on brushes that are highly colored and hardened with paint, that I would have otherwise discarded. I use the Mona Lisa Pink Brush Soap to clean my brushes right after a painting session. These cleaners also help the condition of your brushes.
After washing my brushes with One of these cleaners, then attach a clothes pin in the handle of the brush and rest the clothespin on the edge of a desk or table so that the brush is hanging with the bristles pointing toward the ground. The gravity then attracts moisture from the brush so that it receives not in the tip, which can damage a brush over time.
