Chapter One-You Might Have to Come Indoors
Chapter 1
You might have to come indoors
From cavalier in Foal by Claudia stack (see www.horsewomeninfoal.com)
There are some things your doctor will not tell you simply because it does not happen him or her that you have to say. One of these things is that pregnancy and motherhood forced to spend a good amount of time indoors. Oh, you resist it at first. But sooner or later, your doctor will dictate: No more riding. No more heavy work. This can be a traumatic transition, I know it was for me. Before pregnancy, I spent most of my waking hours either outside or in my work earn money for the payment of farm, feed bills, shoeing horses, etc. In five months of my pregnancy outside activities were considerably reduced by summer heat and a hernia. For the next sixth months, I had the unusual pleasure of spending most of my time inside.
Before drawing the conclusion that I live in a beautiful property and my life has nothing to do with yours, oh cavalier compatriots in trouble, I hasten to clarify. My fabulous equestrian heritage really is just a few acres in a remote corner of Carolina North. My only indulgence in the early days of the possession of the farm? A new, four shedrow stall barn with tack room center. Of course. Horses basked in the comfort of their new individual stalls with Run-out plots, while I contented myself with a used house trailer which let singlewide rain blew in the East.
It was not until my husband, Joe, came along some years later that I I became very aware of the shortcomings of life in what he calls "the tin. "Finally we managed to enjoy a construction loan, despite the fact that he was in graduate school, I worked only thirty hours per week at the University Local. Thus, our current home has come to be a true home without wheels. Inside, I walk through much of my pregnancy later, looking longingly out the window, my horses as idling in the pasture.
Eventually you find that TV is boring, you can not spend all your time on the phone, you really have oiled all your Tack (even all parts well-hidden in the old trunk), and You read all the current books and magazines that interest you. Your husband or partner is outside mowing, trying desperately to get your cowardly and then he comes to you. Is not there any indoor activities that your mother and sister to do? I mean, except in ironing all the clothes baby, who did not make sense anyway because the baby is going to offend. But there is something else, it has to do with home. You look around the pile of horse magazines and mounds of laundry that you've managed to wash but never had time to sleep before. And the aurora thought I could clean. This is the first step in your transformation from just a few domesticated family.
This thing with the pipes in the hall closet is a vacuum (vak'-tedar). Ask your mother or friend Non-Horsey how it works. You will probably find some spray glass cleaner and furniture polish under your kitchen sink. The wipe on and wipe off the media appropriate to many as the soap saddle tack.
This is your chance to appreciate how most people live, strange as it is. In the past, you might have wondered how people who Do not ride fill the void of meaning in their lives? Why do they live like they do? You secretly intrigued for years about why people live deliberately a property not Horsey is not even close to a decent boarding stable. Did they have horses in the past and have now passed something else, it seems unlikely? Or, what seems more likely, perhaps they are saving their money for that perfect horse or horse.
In any event, you can not spend all your time looking at the irrationality of most people in the world. You have things to do. This is different from your previous lists of priorities, which curiously never seemed to hold great interest for others. Your mother does not usually Call in to ask when you're going to build another leap skiing. Yet, suddenly dozens of people are talking to you about things that might never have occurred to you, but you probably should do. For example, they ask you questions on the theme of your nursery. The theme is very important and takes a swing and his own life, because people expect you to actually buy gifts related to the theme. Your friend at work, the only people to compare Martha Stewart is planning a shower for you around what remains to be determined by the subject. At this moment I panicked and chose Gloria Gaynor "I Will Survive", but then it became clear to me that this was not a song that I had to choose. This theme relates decorated.
I realized Early American Drywall is not a suitable choice of decor, but I remain confused. All my money went to the premium for holding the food bill and the bill of the obstetrician. Who has money for a theme? Who has time? I felt absolutely insufficient. Then I put my own comfortable clothes to Joe so he can add a guard around the top and make a world changing table. I painted myself and felt a little better.
Another aspect to be is inside you may actually begin to cook on a regular basis. Whereas in the past, you came in May food, fuel and not thought to eat only fill the tank of your truck Food does take on new importance when you are pregnant. Your first indication of this is in the first quarter, when it will be incredibly hungry or sick. Your food choices will seem much more important, or because you can not get enough or because little appeal.
I'm not the best cook by any measure, but I learned to cultivate the kitchen efficiently. This can mean either a batch of quick meal, or prepare something that can sit forgotten in the oven for several hours until done. Since I hate to waste time mundane things, I multi-task when I cook, sometimes to a degree that frightens my husband. Usual pre-dinner scene in my kitchen includes me the phone planning a course, while I make a salad, pay some bills, and keep an eye on the chicken roasting in the oven.
I am not mesh, tips or water, but unless all my friends have lied for years it seems that my simple way to roast a chicken yields reliably dinner is better than just edible. I'll share here, for what it is Worth: Rinse the cavity of whole chicken and dry with paper towels. Sprinkle with salt and pepper on the whole bird, especially inside. Pour a little lemon in the cavity. Fill the cavity with onions diced (these are not for eating but to keep the bird moisture and flavor from the inside as it cooks). If desired, slide few bursts of cloves of raw garlic under the skin on the whole bird. Cover with foil and roast at 500 degrees for 30 minutes, then 350 degrees for thirty minutes more per pound. Take the start sheet for the last half hour. Preparation time: 5 minutes. Cooking time: general 3 1 / 2 hours. A good side dish is very easy is to cook the potatoes alongside the chicken for the last hour of cooking.
This concludes the extent of my inner knowing. If you get really frustrated by folding laundry and being indoors, try to borrow some training videos, you've been meaning to watch.
Tips for the moment:
• Start thinking about arrangements to help with your horses in the latter part of pregnancy and the first months after birth. Is there a student or a friend who might be willing to trade work for riding privileges? This works to your advantage in two ways, since you need help in the barn and the horses will get some exercise.
• Take a look long and hard at your operation and you wonder if you should make some reductions in the herd, or, if you board horses for others, if there are more trouble than anything else. Remember, there will come a time when someone else must feed themselves, turning, etc., for you. You want to run just as smooth as possible. This could mean that sale cute filly three years you do not quite convoluted to break yet.
• Take a look also your stable household finances. Do not be blinded by free baby. Even if you have the assurance of good health, you are probably significant medical and hospital bill. In addition, even a healthy baby, the doctor sees a lot in the first year. A sling up medical bills faster than a racehorse ex-spouse. Now think about where you can you cut.
