Leadership outside the box: Huggy Bear
I met there Huggy bear seven years while buying another pony for our programs.
Huggy is a small, round, completely adorable Haflinger ponies. It could be the pony show for Gund Stuffed company animals. Looking to Huggy and I bought locally.
In the six years that I own Huggy, I discovered the interior of this cute, cuddly body is stiff, unyielding spirit, apparently suspicious of all humans. I spent hours on the ground looking around and galloped away from anyone trying to catch up. I saw countless people dragged to the arena door. Huggy can run through a back door faster than most of my horses can go forward. Yet, I also found someone follow Huggy around the arena trying to clearly establish a connection.
This horse, with its particular problems and behavioral made me look at my leadership role in a much more creative: For the first time I had an employee who could not or would not be a team player. When we bring home a horse at our farm, we consider a lifetime commitment. On the other First, we run a business and we prefer that our horses earn their keep. I firmly believe that animals and people must be involved in productive work. I had to find a way to work with Huggy so he can join our team in some capacity.
The training methods that worked so well with my other horses had little or no effect on Huggy but I continued with my system for accepted right time. It took me a long time to realize that I was caught in the trap of "this is how we always do things here. " I was comfortable with the routine of these methods, while skirting the fact that Huggy not become more consistent.
I had to throw all my ideas about training horses from the window and focus on really listening to Huggy's perspective. Only then did I notice that whenever he was stressed or uncomfortable, instinct takes over and he would fall in a scheme to escape by running backwards. This was not planned, thoughtful response, but a model unconscious and instinctive behavior. Huggy did not like his behavior was not a positive solution to long term. It was a avoidance strategy that has served its purpose at the moment.
Something was at the origin and / or strengthen its actions. I know from my experience as a teacher of thirty years to alter or extinguish negative behavior, we must identify the underlying causes of behavior real. It is a simple and obvious concept, but most of us tend to overlook. As Stephen Covey says, "We want be judged on our intentions, but we judge others by their behavior. "I needed to understand the actions Huggy his point of view.
I also know from my teaching experience that people with autism and sensory problems often seek deep pressure calm their over-reactive nervous systems. More Huggy's studying the problem, the more inclined I was to think that some of his questions could be sensory related. If Huggy, I theorized that pulling back against their halters and skirts that could provide very gratifying pressure deep.
We had tried unsuccessfully for several weeks to convince Huggy be with our great power editing. He returned not the block every time and I remained firm with the tightrope, we end up in a tug of war. This time, as Huggy is detached from the block I moved with him. I kept the tether slack so he could not create pressure for himself with the rope. When he finally stopped I quietly sign for him to go ahead and waited for him to make his decision. Huggy stood and walked quietly to block. It took less than five minutes to solve a problem that we had been struggling with for months.
While Huggy will always be the same pony I bought my relationship with him has improved significantly. I'm learning to really listen to him and he is learning trust me. My horse is useful to the end. In return he taught me to look at difficult situations and difficult employees as opportunities from outside the box.
I am now more aware of unconscious patterns of behavior in others and myself. To really understand the actions of others that I should take the time to listen and learn more about their underlying motivations. In education, me and the rest of us these lessons, Huggy has earned its place in our team.
