Bustier and Corsets: A History of Lingerie
As recently as 1830, the corset was thought of as a medical necessity. Because women are the weaker sex, they need the support of a laced corset to hold them in place for any length of time. Girls from the age of two or three began their life to be attached to a corset for daily tight laced. Unfortunately for women, when they reached their peak, they were unable to stand or sit upright for very long without getting the "vapors".
Early corsets were made of canvas, (plenty of that around all sailboats) and had laces all the way up from the back so tight as to make it darn near impossible to draw a deep breath. Needless to say, the fashion (or fetish) of the day was a very small line.
Today's modern corset is made of materials more sweet and soft as silk, satin and lace (as leather) to name a few. It is designed to accentuate the curves of a woman, do not alter.
