Rodeo Barrel Racing
I guess I just want to know lots of information on barrel racing?
Can you barrel race in a rodeo with a 12 year old horse? How many years does it take to train for a rodeo? How do you enter in a rodeo and how old do you have to be? Is there a junior Competition? Thanks for your help!
Yes. There are a LOT of 12-20 year old successfully performing rodeo barrel horses. To reach rodeo competition level, which is professional level, I would expect it to take about 3 years of work with a talented horse, and a talented rider/trainer. To happily show local level shows, I suspect some people put only months or even weeks of training into the horse. Some don't even train, they just point the horse through the pattern, this is not usually a winner though.
There are lots of age divisions in NBHA, and I have seen junior divisions at rodeos, but National Finals Rodeo seems to have no age divisions. I have seen 3 year old kids "competing" at some barrel competitions. Contact the people who sanction the rodeos that you plan to participate in to find out age regulations.
