How to clean a saddle horse
If you own your own horse, it is very important to keep it clean. This keeps the leather in good state and maximizes the longevity of your saddle.
A saddle should be lightly cleaned at least once a week and thoroughly cleaned at least once a month. The more often you ride, the more often you should clean it. Even if you have not been riding, saddle storage in benefits cleaned once a month and oiling. If well cared for saddle can last 50 years or more. If left alone it will become damaged and lose quickly value.
To begin, you will need a small bucket of warm water, a bar of saddle soap, a pot of oil or saddle air conditioner, and two sponges. You may find a soft toothbrush useful for grain out of holes, or tools.
Place your saddle on a secure medium. This can easily be made of wood, or you can buy a saddle support your Tack Shop.
Wet your sponge first and lather with soap. Starting on the seat, gently rub your sponge with saddle soap. You do not want your saddle wet, so remember not to twist most of the water in your sponge. Rinse it regularly and add fresh soap.
You will need to clean the entire surface of the leather. This means both the finished surface and the underside of each part of your saddle. After each section of washing with soap, rinse the sponge and wipe any excess soap off the skin. Use the toothbrush to remove any soap captured in the billets or holes in the fancy equipment.
Some parts of your saddle is removable. Remove the stirrups and leathers, making sure to remember both that the holes that you were using, and how they go about your saddle. If you have metal brackets, remove the rubber treads and soak the pieces both metal and rubber in your water. Do not soak the leather - clean them with saddle soap, the same way you cleaned the rest of the saddle.
Be careful not to forget clean the underside of your saddle. This may be one of the dirtiest parts of your saddle, especially if your horse a child who sweats a lot. Sweat is a real shame leather, it is very important to clean.
Once the saddle is clean, wet sponge second so it is soft and malleable. Squeeze excess water. Now moisten the sponge with your leather conditioner. Without making a thick layer of oil on the leather clean entire surface of your saddle with a leather conditioner. It should absorb into the leather. Any excess should be wiped up quickly because it can discolor the leather. Be sure to oil the stirrups and any other pieces that you removed in May
Finally, take the brackets out of the water and rub closed any remaining dirt with a toothbrush. You do not need soap or oil on the calipers, unless you have leather stirrups (which you would not have soaked in water first).
Put your seat back together, make sure you remove all parts are replaced correctly.
You can find products miracle solution for cleaning your Tack. If these projects are ok for situations where you just want to cleaning, or after each trip, they are not suitable for thorough cleaning. Many leave residues that can gunk up in the long run.
When you choose a type of oil, be aware that some oils such as oil, beef up, will darken the leather. Others as Lexol will not. Some oils may leave residue on the seat, and could stain your pants. Talk to your local Tack Shop if you are in doubt the best product for your needs.
